About Yoga

Yoga has been developed over thousands of years and as a result there are hundreds of different styles.  No style is better or worse than another, but there is surely a style to suit everybody!

Yoga is great to tone and strengthen your body, increase flexibility, to relieve stress and calm the mind.  For some it is a new way to keep fit and healthy, for others it provides a sanction and release and for others it is a way to look internally.   There are a myriad of reasons why people practice yoga and all reasons are just as valid as each other.  Yoga is fun - enjoy it!

Sri Sheshadri with Emma - Sheshadri's shala is based in Mysore, India and he teaches traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga the system learned by Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois, and as taught to him by BNS Iyengar.  For more information visit his website at www.sheshadri.con

Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga is an ancient system of yoga developed by Sri T. Krihnamacharya and his student Pattabhi Jois.   Pattabhi Jois taught ashtanga yoga in Mysore from 1948 until he left his physical body in May 2009.  Sharath, his grandson, is now the Director of the yoga school in Mysore.

Ashtanga means 'eight-limbed', referring to the following eight practices:

Yama (moral practice)
Niyama (self-purification and study)
Asana (posture)
Pranayama (breathing practice)
Pratayahara (sense control)
Dharana (concentration)
Dhyana (meditation)
Samadhi (contemplation)

Ultimately we aim to control the mind - but it not quite as easy as that for most of us!  This is why the first stage is to ensure a strong healthy body by taking up regular asana (physical yoga) practice.  Once the body is controlled, we are advised that it is easier to control the mind.
